Using Numbered Head Together (NHT) Method to Improve Descriptive Writing Skills of Grade 10 Science Students of MAN 01 Alor

This study is entitled: “Using Numbered Head Together Method To Improve Writing Skills For Grade 10 Science Students MAN 01 Alor”. It focused on how the Numbered Head Together method can improve grade 10 students’ descriptive writing and find out the students’ strengths and weaknesses in descriptive writing. The method used by the researcher is Classroom Action Research. The data were obtained from observation, tests, and documentation. This research was conducted from November 1 to November 14, 2021. The subject of the study is the second-semester grade 10 science students’ MAN 01 Alor, which consists of 15 students. This Classroom Action Research was conducted at MAN 01 Alor. This research showed that the action hypothesis in cycle I was not proved because the pre-test snd post-test scores in this research did not reach the standard of success. It can be seen that the average score of the pretest in the first cycle was 48.7%, and The average post-test score in the first cycle was 52.33. Based on the analysis of students' writing in cycle I, the students’ faced some problems in descriptive writing. In cycle II, the action hypothesis is proved. In this cycle, students have adapted to the Numbered Head Together method. It can be seen from the student's pre-test and post-test scores in this cycle. The average value of the pretest in the second cycle was 69.7. The average value of the post-test in the second cycle was 72.73, which is a reasonably high average. The Numbered Head Together method improved through extended group discussions, more meetings in cycle II, and increased interaction between teachers and students. The writer found that there were some strengths in students writing. Some students are good at organization, content, vocabulary, capitalization, and grammar. The students expressed their idea very well, making the reader entertained. However, the result of this study also showed that the students had several weaknesses related to the content, organization, grammar, mechanical (punctuations, capitalization, and spelling), and vocabulary of their descriptive writing.
